February 2,2003
I awoke around 9:15 am central time on February 1, 2003 with my mother calling me.  Her first word's were "We've lost communications with the Shuttle Columbia and there are news clips on TV that looks like it must have come apart on re-entry."  I don't work for the space program but have strongly supported NASA ever since I witnessed Neil Armstrong walk on the moon when I was three years old.  My mother knows this.  I was awake instantly and asked what station she was watching.  I tuned to the same channel as my mother and listened.  She mentioned the other time in late January over a decade and a half ago when we had both witnessed the loss of another seven souls to America's space program.  I hung up the phone with her and watched the media circus all day.  Most of that day I was numb.  I refused to answer most phone calls.  Now it's February 2, 2003.  Time to get on with life.  The bi-partisanship in Washington and across our country will exploit this event as they do everything else.  Beware of the ones who make claims that "we have no business spending money on space exploration."  If you listen to those individuals, the seven heroes who perished yesterday died  in vain.  NASA made a statement that caught my attention.  They had mentioned "accountability".  I just hope this was not mentioned to make a sacrificial lamb of somebody.  After the investigation is completed I believe we will find that it was a result of human error.  I hope "accountability" means that in the future, all steps possible will be taken to insure that the same thing never happens again.

It's logical for the human race to head for the stars.  There will come a day when the natural resources of this planet will no longer sustain our population.  The space program of today is the infantile first steps to where I believe we have to go to fulfill the destiny god has given us.

As of yesterday heaven has seven new guardian angels watching over the American Space Program.  These angels will take their place alongside seventeen other angels.  They will watch over and protect a new generation of American Astronauts that they inspired.  Our American Angels!

The first annual Digital Aliens party was a huge success.  Digital Aliens would like to thank Josh Watkins for the great looking personalized etched beer mugs he made for all members and guest.  Also we would like to thank the South Shore Harbour Resort for the great facility.

The cards were delt, the beer flowed and money changed hands.  The games went until the early morning hours and there was no clear victory on anyone's part.  We also want to thank all members and their spouses for the contributions of refreshments.

I arrived at work this morning ahead of everyone.  I turned on the television and discovered that we had lost one of the greatest Americans ever last night.  His name was Bob Hope.  There will never be an entertainer or patriot like him.  I feel sad for myself and the world but not for Bob.  He lived a very long and wonderful life.  He saw so much and did so much in his life.  He was successful in every media he was involved in.  Today is a very sad day for America indeed.  Where will we ever find another person so ready to give so much of himself or herself.  Remember that his devotion to our troops wasn't a sacrifice for him, it was his pleasure and so few people can say the with any sincerity.
Hey Bob!  We thank you for the memories!

(Bush Renews Area 51 Secrecy Order.  Claims Exempting Base From Disclosing Info Of "Paramount Interest")

Fueling continued speculation about the top-secret government base, President Bush has renewed the exemption allowing the military to refuse to provide any information about its operations at Area 51 in Nevada.
Saying it was of "paramount interest" to exempt the Groom Lake facility, Bush signed the order, which has been renewed every year since President Clinton first put it in place in 1995, the Associated Press reports.
Area 51, located on a dry lake bed 90 miles north of Las Vegas, has been the subject of widespread speculation, with some believing the federal government is hiding evidence of extraterrestrial vehicles or life forms. The mystery began in the nearby town of Rachel several years ago when a worker at the Nevada Test Site allegedly saw alien space ships at the base.
The Extraterrestrial Highway, a portion of Route 375 renamed by the state of Nevada.
In issuing the exemption, AP reports, Bush cited 1994 lawsuits that were brought by injured workers and the widows of two workers who claim the men were harmed by toxic materials at Groom Lake.
"It is baffling to see the government continue to cover up what went on at Area 51," attorney Jonathan Turley, who represents the family, told the news service. "It is clear that there were … crimes and that government officials continue to resist any disclosure that would confirm such criminal content."
One result of Bush's renewal is exempting the Air Force from following federal, state or local solid-waste and hazardous-waste laws if classified information would be disclosed.
While acknowledging the existence of the base, the federal government has not revealed what goes on there. The area is constantly patrolled and is under a no-fly zone.

The fourth annual Digital Pirates poker game was a severe letdown.  Attendance was extremely low even though it was one of the best facilities the organization has ever had.  Digital Pirates captain Moby Dick would like to thank all who attended.  The organization may discontinue the event all together.  When questioned about the low turnout, Moby Dick had this to say.

"In late 2002 in order to fund different events throughout the year we agreed on an annual membership fee.  This did not set well with many members because it was a complete contradiction of what the group stood for.  The numbers in the charter dwindled greatly right from the start.  I'm not sure it's something that we will ever be able to overcome."

The Digital Pirates annual poker game has been a very enjoyable event since it's inception.  Let's hope they can find what they have lost and keep it together.
